Milan to Tirano
private transfer.

Tirano is the Italian terminus of the Bernina Express, the UNESCO line that climbs from 429 m to the 2,253 m of Ospizio Bernina. From Milan it is about 160 km, ~2.5 hours by car. And there is a timetable detail the train cannot fix: in summer the morning panoramic train leaves at 08:06 — before the first train from Milan arrives. A dawn transfer gets you there.

Distances and times from Milan

From Milan you take the SS36 expressway along Lake Como to Colico, then the SS38 through the Valtellina valley. Times are estimates, traffic permitting: the SS36 gets congested on weekends, while at dawn — the typical departure for the Bernina — the road is clear.

Milan to Tirano by train — and where it falls short

The direct Trenord to Tirano works. The problem is the timetable: if your goal is the morning Bernina Express, the maths does not add up. Here is the honest comparison.

Private chauffeur transfer~2h30 door-to-doorfixed quote on WhatsAppleaves your hotel at dawn if needed: you reach the RhB station with time to spare for the 08:06 panoramic train

The calculation nobody spells out: the first train from Milano Centrale leaves at 06:20 and reaches Tirano around 08:50 — the morning Bernina Express left at 08:06, 44 minutes earlier. By train from Milan, the only panoramic departure you can catch is the early-afternoon one. Travelling solo and light, and happy with that time? Take the Trenord — we run transfers and we will still tell you that. For the morning Bernina, for groups and for luggage, a dawn transfer is the only comfortable way.

Where we drop you: Tirano, Sondrio and the upper valley

We cover the whole Valtellina: we pick the right arrival point for your itinerary together.

Tirano, Bernina station — the Rhaetian Railway station, Italian terminus of the UNESCO line, is right next to the FS one: we drop you at the entrance. The typical drop-off for the 08:06 morning panoramic train.

Sondrio — the valley's capital, surrounded by terraced vineyards: town centre, companies and hotels. On the way to Tirano, ~25 minutes before it.

Bormio and Livigno on request — we continue past Tirano into the upper valley: Bormio's historic thermal baths and slopes, Livigno's duty-free zone at 1,816 m. Mention it in your quote request.

Why a private transfer works best for Tirano and the Valtellina

The morning Bernina is only reachable this way — in summer the panoramic train leaves at 08:06 and the first train from Milan arrives around 08:50: with a dawn pickup from your hotel you are in Tirano with time to spare, and we plan the departure around your train.

The right station, with your luggage — in Tirano the Rhaetian Railway station sits right next to the FS one: we drop you at the entrance, bags unloaded steps from the platform.

Groups, ski gear and equipment — in winter the Valtellina means skis and double luggage: in the van you travel up to 7 with everything in the boot, no changes, no stairs.

A lake stop on the way — the SS36 runs along Lake Como: a stop in Varenna on the way out costs almost no detour. Same driver, one tailored day.

Transfer out, train back — the most requested combination: chauffeur at dawn for the 08:06 Bernina, return the same day on the Trenord from Tirano. We help you fit the timetables together.

FAQ

How long does it take from Milan to Tirano by car?+
Milan to Tirano is about 160 km: the SS36 expressway along Lake Como to Colico, then the SS38 through the Valtellina with the Morbegno bypass — a typical time of 2h30-2h50. Sondrio is ~135 km (2h-2h15), and Sondrio to Tirano is ~26 km more. These are estimates: the SS36 gets congested on weekends, while at dawn — the typical departure for the Bernina — the road is clear.
Can I catch the morning Bernina Express from Milan?+
Not by train, in summer: the first Trenord from Milano Centrale leaves at 06:20 and reaches Tirano around 08:50, when the morning Bernina Express (08:06 in the summer 2026 timetable, towards Chur; for St. Moritz you change at Pontresina) has already left. That leaves only the early-afternoon panoramic departure (~2:20 pm). With a private transfer you leave your hotel at dawn and reach the Rhaetian Railway station with time to spare: we plan the pickup around your train.
Is the train or a private transfer better for Tirano?+
The direct Trenord from Milano Centrale takes ~2h30, costs from ~€13 and runs about 15 times a day (first 06:20, last 21:20), also stopping in Sondrio: travelling solo and light it is a great option — we run transfers and we will still tell you that. A private transfer wins when the timetable matters (the morning Bernina), when you are a group with luggage or skis, or when you want door-to-door from your hotel with no changes.
Do you also serve Sondrio, Bormio and Livigno?+
Yes, we cover the whole Valtellina: Sondrio, Tirano, Aprica, Bormio and Livigno. On request the pickup can start at Malpensa, Linate or Bergamo airport with flight monitoring, so you reach the valley without going through Milan. For St. Moritz and the Engadin, see the dedicated Milan to St. Moritz transfer.
How much does a Milan-Tirano transfer cost?+
The price depends on vehicle, time and arrival point in the valley: ask for a quote on WhatsApp with your pickup point, date and time. We reply in 2-5 minutes with a fixed figure, agreed before departure — unlike a metered taxi over 160 km, no surprises at the end.
Is the transfer suitable for groups, ski gear and bulky luggage?+
Yes — that is exactly when it makes the most sense: in the van you travel up to 7 with suitcases and equipment in the boot, and in Tirano you step out in front of the Rhaetian Railway station, right next to the FS one. On the train the same luggage means crowded carriages and no guaranteed space for gear.
Do you have a VIP van with reclining seats for Tirano?+
Yes, on request: a Mercedes V-Class in VIP configuration with 2 reclining business seats and up to 5 seats in the back, ideal for a drive of about 2.5 hours. Ask for the VIP Van in your WhatsApp message along with pickup point, date and time: you get availability and a fixed quote in 2–5 minutes.
Can I pay in crypto?+
Yes, on request: we accept Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and USDT/USDC stablecoins, alongside card and cash. Agree your quote on WhatsApp as usual and you'll receive a payment link; the amount stays the euro price agreed.
