Private transfer vs train: which to choose?
Lake Como is accessible by Trenord from Milano Cadorna (to Como Lago) or Milano Centrale (to Como San Giovanni and Varenna). The train works well if you're a solo traveller heading to Como town or Varenna — but it has limitations:
- •Bellagio, Tremezzo, Menaggio are NOT directly reached by train — you'd need bus + ferry combinations.
- •Travelling with luggage on Italian trains is uncomfortable, especially in summer.
- •For groups of 3+ people the per-person cost of a private transfer is competitive with train tickets.
- •Train schedules don't always match flight arrivals, especially late at night.
Lake Como day trip from Milan
A classic one-day plan: catch a morning train from Milano Centrale — the direct Trenord service reaches Como S. Giovanni in about 40 minutes — and spend a couple of hours in Como town. Then head to the heart of the lake: the fast boat to Bellagio takes 45-50 minutes (roughly every 2 hours, more frequent around lunchtime and late afternoon), the slow boat about 2 hours, and the ASF C30 bus about 1h15. Mid-lake, the Bellagio–Varenna ferry crossing takes about 15 minutes and runs roughly hourly, with boat connections to Menaggio as well — then make your way back to Milan in the evening.
Prefer to skip timetables and ferry queues? Book a private chauffeur at your disposal for the day: door-to-door pickup at your Milan hotel, the driver waits at every stop, and you visit several villages in one day at your own pace — including the ones the train never reaches.
