Milan to Monaco by train — why there is no direct option

Many visitors search for the “Milan to Monaco train” expecting a direct service. There isn't one: the direct Thello train was withdrawn on 1 July 2021 and has never returned. Today the rail journey means a Trenitalia Intercity from Milano Centrale to Ventimiglia, then a compulsory change onto a French TER to Monaco-Monte-Carlo — about 30 minutes for the final leg, with at least 6 workable connections a day.

All in, count on 4h30–5h. The tickets are separate — Intercity from €19.90 in 2nd class plus TER at €10.20, typically around €30 in total (the full range runs €29–65) — and the connection at Ventimiglia is not protected: the TER is a separate ticket and the connection isn't guaranteed, so it's wise to allow at least 45 minutes between trains.

A private transfer covers the whole journey door-to-door in roughly 3h15–3h45: one car from your Milan hotel or the airport straight to Monte Carlo, no platform change with luggage at Ventimiglia, and the price is a fixed quote agreed in advance on WhatsApp.

Hotels we serve in Monte Carlo

Monte-Carlo is the Principality's main district — alongside Monaco-Ville (the old town on the Rock), La Condamine around the port and Fontvieille, built on land reclaimed from the sea. We drop you off at the entrance of the grand hotels of the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer group and beyond:

  • 🏛️ Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo — on Place du Casino, with Michelin-starred dining
  • 🏛️ Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo — Belle Époque palace built 1890–1896 by architect Jean Marquet, with the participation of Gustave Eiffel
  • 🏛️ Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort — sandy lagoon and the two-Michelin-star Blue Bay restaurant
  • 🏛️ Private residences and apartments in Monte-Carlo, La Condamine and Fontvieille

Grand Prix, Yacht Show, Casino: when Monaco peaks

A sovereign state of just 2.08 km² — the second-smallest country in the world after the Vatican, independent since the Franco-Monegasque treaty of 1861 and home to about 38,400 residents — Monaco concentrates an outsized calendar. Around the big dates, cars and chauffeurs sell out early:

  • 🏎️ Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix — run on the street circuit of Monte-Carlo; the 2026 edition took place on 5–7 June, with the race on Sunday 7 June at 15:00 CEST
  • 🛥️ Monaco Yacht Show — 23–26 September 2026 at Port Hercule, with over 120 superyachts in the water
  • 🎰 Casino de Monte-Carlo — inaugurated on 18 February 1863; the adjoining opera hall, the Salle Garnier, was added in 1878–79 by Charles Garnier, architect of the Paris Opéra
  • 🐙 Oceanographic Museum — opened on 29 March 1910 by Prince Albert I, perched 85 m above the sea; Jacques-Yves Cousteau directed it from 1957 to 1988

Summer is high season across the whole Riviera. If your trip falls around the Grand Prix or the Yacht Show, send us your dates as early as you can — availability goes first at exactly those times.

Why a private transfer is the best choice for Monaco

  • No direct train — the rail route means a compulsory change at Ventimiglia, separate tickets and 4h30–5h in total. By car it's one seat, door-to-door, in roughly 3h15–3h45.
  • No parking hunt — Monaco runs 46 public car parks (first hour free in most, then around €2.70/h, with the Monapass app for live availability; the Casino car park alone holds some 560–600 cars). With a chauffeur you skip all of it and are dropped at the door.
  • Airports on both sides — Malpensa to Monte Carlo is about 320 km (~3h40 on average); Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE) is only 30–32 km away, about 30 minutes with light traffic. Flight monitoring and Meet & Greet included.
  • Riviera on the way — add a stop in Sanremo (42 km before Monte Carlo, about 35 minutes away) or Ventimiglia, and book the Monaco to Milan return with the same driver.

About 303 km by road: down the A7 towards Genoa, then the A10 to Ventimiglia and on along the coast to the Principality. Without traffic the drive takes 3h07–3h36 — realistically allow about 3h15–3h45. From Malpensa Airport it is around 320 km, on average about 3h40.
Is there a direct train from Milan to Monaco?+
No — the direct Thello service was withdrawn on 1 July 2021. Today you take a Trenitalia Intercity from Milano Centrale to Ventimiglia, then change to a French TER for Monaco-Monte-Carlo: about 4h30–5h in total, with at least 6 workable connections a day. Tickets are separate (Intercity from €19.90 in 2nd class, TER €10.20 — typically around €30 in total) and the connection is not guaranteed, so allow at least 45 minutes at Ventimiglia.

Yes. We work along the whole Riviera, on both sides of the border: Nice and Cannes on the French side, Sanremo and Ventimiglia on the Italian side. Sanremo is a natural stop on the way — 42 km from Monte Carlo, about 35 minutes — and we also cover return journeys from Monaco back to Milan.
What documents do I need for the border?+
