Milan to Lake Maggiore private transfer,
with English-speaking chauffeur.

Stresa and the Borromean Islands are about an hour to 1h15 from Milan up the A8 and A26 — and only about 45–50 minutes from Malpensa Airport. The EuroCity train is quick to Stresa, but it serves one stop on one shore: a private transfer takes you door-to-door — Stresa, Baveno, Verbania, Arona, even Locarno and Ascona across the Swiss border.

Milan to Lake Maggiore by train — and where it falls short

Fair is fair: the train works on this route. Stresa sits on the Simplon line from Milano Centrale towards Domodossola and Switzerland, with roughly 12–13 direct trains a day. The fastest are the EuroCity services to Geneva and Basel, which stop at Stresa after 55–59 minutes — though seat reservation is compulsory on the international trains — while regional and RegioExpress services take about 1h10, with tickets from €8.60–9.

The catch is the last leg. The fast EuroCity stops only at Stresa: for Baveno you're down to the slower regionals, and Verbania Pallanza's station sits well outside the town itself — while the Lombard side or the Swiss towns of Locarno and Ascona are another journey altogether. With suitcases, children or an early flight home, every change is more hassle than it looks.

A private transfer covers the whole journey door-to-door — 1h–1h15 from central Milan to Stresa, 45–50 minutes from Malpensa: one car from your hotel or the arrivals hall straight to the lakefront, your chauffeur handles the bags, and the price is a fixed quote agreed in advance on WhatsApp. It works in both directions — Milan to Lake Maggiore, or the lake back to Milan and the airports.

Where we take you on Lake Maggiore

The lake stretches 64.4 km across three territories — Piedmont to the west, Lombardy to the east and the Swiss Canton Ticino at its northern end — and one car from Milan serves them all:

  • 🏝️ Stresa — the grand-hotel lakefront facing the Borromean Islands; in season, public boats and private motorboats leave the promenade roughly every 30 minutes, and the crossing to Isola Bella takes just 5–10 minutes
  • Baveno — Stresa's quieter neighbour on the western shore, a small lakefront resort facing the same islands
  • 🌺 Verbania Pallanza — home of the Villa Taranto Botanical Gardens: 16 hectares and some 20,000 botanical species and varieties along 7 km of avenues, created by the Scottish captain Neil McEacharn from 1931, open from March to late October 2026
  • 🗽 Arona — the Sancarlone, the colossal copper statue of San Carlo Borromeo completed in 1698: 35 m with its granite pedestal (the statue alone is 23.40 m), which Bartholdi studied as a model for the Statue of Liberty
  • 🏰 Angera — on the Lombard shore: the Rocca di Angera, a Borromeo fortress since 1449, houses the Museum of Dolls and Toys (over 1,000 dolls, among the most important collections in Europe) and is open from 12 March to 8 November 2026
  • 🇨🇭 Locarno, Ascona and Brissago — the Swiss end of the lake, in Canton Ticino: we run cross-border transfers there too — just carry a passport or ID card for the border

The Borromean Islands: Isola Bella, Isola Madre, Isola dei Pescatori

The islands are the reason most people come. Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori are reached by boat from the Stresa lakefront — the public Navigazione Lago Maggiore service plus private motorboats, with departures roughly every 30 minutes in season; the crossing from Stresa to Isola Bella takes just 5–10 minutes. In 2026 Palazzo Borromeo and the other Terre Borromeo sites are open from 12 March to 8 November, with entry from 10:00 and last admission at 17:00 (16:00 in late October); the Isola Bella adult ticket is €27.

This is where the transfer earns its keep: your chauffeur drops you right by the jetty on the Stresa promenade, you hop on a boat, and the car is waiting when you come back — then on to Baveno, Villa Taranto or your hotel. One note for planners: the Stresa–Mottarone cable car has been closed since 2021 and, as of June 2026, has yet to reopen — so build your day around the lake and the islands.

Hotels we serve on Lake Maggiore

We work with the lake's grand hotels, with Meet & Greet at the airport and drop-off at reception:

  • 🏛️ Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées & SPA — Stresa, 5-star built in 1861–1863 facing Isola Bella, a member of Locali Storici d'Italia; Ernest Hemingway stayed here in September 1918 — room 106 is today the Hemingway Suite — and set part of "A Farewell to Arms" at the hotel
  • 🏛️ Villa e Palazzo Aminta — Stresa, 5-star luxury in a Belle Époque villa, member of The Leading Hotels of the World, 71 rooms and suites looking out over the Borromean Islands, open seasonally from April to October

Why a private transfer is the best choice for Lake Maggiore

  • Straight off the plane — Stresa is about 51 km from Malpensa via the A26, around 45–50 minutes by car: your chauffeur meets you in arrivals with flight monitoring and Meet & Greet, and you're on the lakefront within the hour.
  • Three shores, one car — the lake is split between Piedmont, Lombardy and Swiss Ticino; the railway serves a stretch of the Piedmont shore, so Verbania Pallanza, Angera and the Swiss towns all need a final leg by road. A private transfer goes straight to your hotel.
  • Across the Swiss border — Locarno, Ascona and Brissago sit at the lake's northern end, in Canton Ticino. We run cross-border transfers there as a normal route; just keep a passport or ID card handy for the border.
  • The islands without logistics — drop-off right by the Stresa jetty, boats roughly every 30 minutes in season, a 5–10 minute crossing to Isola Bella, and the car waiting when you return.
  • Full-day chauffeur — combine Stresa and the islands with Villa Taranto at Pallanza or the Rocca di Angera across the water, with the same driver.

FAQ

How far is Lake Maggiore from Milan — and from Malpensa?+
Stresa is about 82–90 km from Milan via the A8 dei Laghi and A26 motorways (exit Carpugnino) — about 1h–1h15 by car. Arona is about 67 km (55 min–1h) and Verbania about 101 km (around 1h20). From Malpensa Airport the run is far shorter: about 51 km to Stresa via the A26, roughly 45–50 minutes by car.
Should we take the train or a private transfer to Lake Maggiore?+
The train is a fair option for Stresa itself: direct trains leave Milano Centrale on the Simplon line towards Domodossola, roughly 12–13 a day. EuroCity services to Geneva and Basel stop at Stresa after 55–59 minutes, but seat reservation is compulsory on the international trains; regionals take about 1h10 with tickets from €8.60–9. The catch is the last leg: if you're staying in Baveno or Verbania, or you land at Malpensa with luggage, a private transfer is door-to-door — one car from the airport or your Milan hotel straight to the lakefront.
Which towns on Lake Maggiore do you serve?+
All three shores. On the Piedmont side: Stresa, Baveno, Verbania Pallanza and Arona; on the Lombard side: Angera and its Rocca; on the Swiss shore: Locarno, Ascona and Brissago — cross-border transfers are available, just carry a passport or ID card for the border. We also cover return journeys, from the lake back to Milan or straight to the airports.
How do we visit the Borromean Islands?+
By boat from the Stresa lakefront: the public Navigazione Lago Maggiore service and private motorboats run to Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori, with departures roughly every 30 minutes in season, and the Stresa–Isola Bella crossing takes 5–10 minutes. In 2026 the Borromean palaces and gardens are open from 12 March to 8 November, with entry from 10:00 and last admission at 17:00 (16:00 in late October); the Isola Bella adult ticket is €27. Your chauffeur drops you right by the jetty.
Is the transfer a good option for families with luggage?+
Yes — it's the easiest way to do the lake with kids. One car from Malpensa arrivals or your Milan hotel straight to your hotel on the lakefront: child seats on request, pushchairs and suitcases in the boot, and the V-Class seats up to 7. From Malpensa to Stresa it's only about 45–50 minutes on the road, with flight monitoring and Meet & Greet included.
How much does a Milan–Lake Maggiore transfer cost?+
We don't use a meter: every journey is a fixed quote agreed in advance on WhatsApp. Send your pickup point, date and number of passengers and a real operator replies in 2–5 minutes.
