Train, bus or private transfer between Lugano and Malpensa?
The honest answer first: there is a direct train. The cross-border TILO S50 line (Biasca–Bellinzona–Lugano–Mendrisio–Varese–Malpensa) stops at both Malpensa T1 and T2, takes about 1h41 from Lugano to Terminal 2 and costs €21 in 2nd class (€27 in 1st). It runs hourly, calling at all regional stations; from Malpensa T2 there are services from 06:13 to 23:13. Good value — if your flight times match the timetable. One caveat for summer 2026: TILO has announced that from 7 June to 5 July the S50 and S40 are cancelled between Stabio, Varese and Malpensa Airport, so the direct link is suspended during that period.
By road there is FlixBus, with an average journey of 1h30, fares from €14.98 and 3 departures a day (first 04:55, last 20:55), plus the airport shuttles listed by Lugano's official tourism site — Malpensa-express (Giosy Tours), Busnavetta and BUXSI — on the Malpensa–Chiasso/Mendrisio/Lugano corridor.
