From Milan you take the A7 to Genoa, then the A12 to the Carrodano-Levanto exit; the last stretch is a narrow coastal road that gets congested on summer weekends. Times are estimates, traffic permitting.

Milan to Cinque Terre by train — and where it falls short

The train works well at the Cinque Terre — inside the villages it is the only way to move. Getting there with a group or luggage is a different story. Here is the honest comparison.

Travelling solo and light? Take the Intercity. With a group or serious luggage the maths changes: the direct train runs every ~2 hours, summer seats sell out early and the evening return is early too. A private transfer cannot take you "into" the villages — no car can — but it takes you to the right spot: Monterosso or La Spezia, steps from the Cinque Terre Express, on your schedule with your luggage handled.

Where we drop you: Monterosso, La Spezia, Levanto

Three arrival points, three different strategies: we pick the right one for your itinerary together.

Monterosso al Mare — the only one of the five villages comfortably reachable by car: we drop you in the Fegina area, ~5 minutes on foot from the beach and the station. Ideal if you sleep in the Cinque Terre or want to start from the largest village.

La Spezia Centrale — the southern gateway and the Cinque Terre Express terminus: trains about every 15 minutes in season to all five villages. The most flexible choice for a day visit.

Levanto — the northern gateway, right after the motorway exit: on the same railway line and a quieter base for longer stays.

Why a private transfer works best for the Cinque Terre

The villages are car-free — from Vernazza onwards only residents may drive in: no car, chauffeur or taxi goes "inside". Your driver drops you at Monterosso (Fegina area, ~5 minutes on foot from the beach and station) or La Spezia, and the Express stops in all five villages.

Your schedule, not the timetable — the direct train from Milan runs about every 2 hours and the last one back leaves early: with a chauffeur you leave your hotel when you want and return at the end of the evening.

Groups and luggage, no changes — big suitcases, strollers, a family of six: by train that means connections, a crowded Express and village stairs. In the van you travel up to 7 with luggage in the boot.

Stop en routePortofino or Santa Margherita on the way there, Portovenere on the way back: same driver, one tailored day along the same coast.

At your disposal — the driver stays in the area and picks you up at the agreed time, also with the by-the-hour formula.

FAQ

How long does it take from Milan to the Cinque Terre by car?+
Milan to Monterosso al Mare is about 230 km: A7 to Genoa, A12 to the Carrodano-Levanto exit, then ~18 km of coastal road — a typical time of about 3 hours (2h45-3h15 depending on traffic). La Spezia, the southern gateway, is ~220 km (2h30-2h50). These are estimates: the coastal road gets congested on summer weekends.
Is the train or a private transfer better for the Cinque Terre?+
The direct Intercity from Milano Centrale to Monterosso takes about 3 hours and costs from ~€16 booking ahead: travelling solo and light, it is a great option. It runs only every ~2 hours though, sells out on summer weekends, and the last direct train back usually leaves between 6:30 and 7 pm. A private transfer leaves from your hotel at your time, carries your group and luggage with no changes, and has no return-time limit.
Can cars drive into the Cinque Terre villages?+
In practice, no: the villages are largely pedestrian and from Vernazza onwards only residents may drive in. Cars comfortably reach only Monterosso (Fegina parking area, ~5 minutes on foot from beach and station), Levanto or La Spezia. That is why your driver drops you at the right spot: from there the Cinque Terre Express runs about every 15 minutes in season and stops in all five villages (single ride €5-10 depending on the Trenitalia calendar).
Do you also serve La Spezia, Levanto and Portovenere?+
Yes: we drive to Monterosso, Levanto, La Spezia and Portovenere, and we are happy to build the day around a stop in Portofino or Santa Margherita Ligure along the same coast — see the Milan to Portofino transfer.
How much does a Milan-Cinque Terre transfer cost?+
The price depends on vehicle, time and exact drop-off point: ask for a quote on WhatsApp with your pickup point, date and time. We reply in 2-5 minutes with a fixed figure, agreed before departure — no surprises.
Is the transfer suitable for groups and bulky luggage?+
Yes — that is exactly when it makes the most sense: with big suitcases, strollers or gear, the train means connections, a crowded Express and village stairs. In the van you travel up to 7 with luggage in the boot, and you step out a short walk from the Express. On request we also pick you up at Malpensa or Linate with flight monitoring.
Do you have a VIP van with reclining seats for the Cinque Terre?+
Yes, on request: a Mercedes V-Class in VIP configuration with 2 reclining business seats and up to 5 seats in the back, ideal for a drive of about 3 hours. Ask for the VIP Van in your WhatsApp message along with pickup point, date and time: you get availability and a fixed quote in 2–5 minutes.
Can I pay in crypto?+
Yes, on request: we accept Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and USDT/USDC stablecoins, alongside card and cash. Agree your quote on WhatsApp as usual and you'll receive a payment link; the amount stays the euro price agreed.
