The problem is not Florence: it is the last mile
The Milan-Florence high-speed line is excellent. But it drops you at Firenze S.M.N., and The Mall is 30 km further out.
From there, the only dedicated public link is Busitalia's The Mall by Bus: it leaves from Piazzale Montelungo (about ten minutes' walk from the station), the ride takes about one hour and the ticket costs €9.50 one way or €18 return. Departures cover the day (morning outbound runs, evening returns in the summer period), but they are fixed times: the last useful bus decides when your shopping ends.
The door-to-door maths from Milan: ~1h50 of train + the walk + the wait + ~1h of bus = ~3h-3h30. Which is what the car takes. Starting from Florence, the shuttle is a great deal; starting from Milan, the fast train's advantage evaporates in the last mile - and on the way back you travel with your shopping bags in hand.

Before you go: the alternatives one hour from Milan
Honestly: if the goal is "an outlet day starting from Milan", you do not need to cross half of Italy. Serravalle Designer Outlet is about one hour away, and so is FoxTown Mendrisio (across the Swiss border). And on the Riviera corridor there is also The Mall Sanremo, the Ligurian sibling of the same group.
The Mall Florence is worth the journey for one precise reason: the mono-brand outlets of the great maisons (Gucci, Prada, Bottega Veneta, Burberry and the like) in a format the north does not have. If that is what you are after, the 3.5 hours make sense; if not, Serravalle wins on logistics.
