Milan to Portofino is ~170 km, but the route is decided on the last 5: the train stops at Santa Margherita Ligure and the last mile — a packed summer bus, a boat, or a 50-100 € local taxi — can cost as much as half the trip. The train gets you close, not there
Portofino has no station: the nearest platform is Santa Margherita Ligure-Portofino, ~5 km from the village.
From Milano Centrale, Intercity and Frecciabianca trains cover the route in 2h05-3h (roughly hourly, from ~12-16 € booked ahead). For a solo traveller with light luggage it is a great base: the problem starts on the Santa Margherita platform, bags in hand, with the last mile still to solve.
If your destination is Santa Margherita itself or Rapallo, the train settles it. If it is Portofino, Paraggi or a hotel on the coast, the real bill is in the next section.
Santa Margherita Ligure to Portofino: the 5 km that decide the day
The four options, with no sugar-coating.
- 🚌 Local bus. ~17 minutes for 5 € a ride: on paper, the answer. In summer it often runs packed, with queues at the stop and luggage held in hand; you also need the right ticket validated before boarding — inspections are frequent and visitors risk a fine.
- ⛵ Boat. ~15 minutes, 6-10 €: the scenic option, weather and timetable permitting. With suitcases and kids it is less convenient than it looks.
- 🚕 Local taxi. Few cars, in huge demand in season, short rides quoted per trip: the ~5 km hop easily runs 50 €, up to ~100 € on high-season evenings. It is the route's paradox: the last mile can cost as much as half a transfer from Milan.
- 🥾 On foot. The path via Paraggi is beautiful: ~45 minutes — not with luggage.
A transfer pre-booked from Milan skips the problem at the root: you step out at the village entrance, at Paraggi by the beach clubs and Langosteria, or at your hotel in Santa Margherita or Rapallo.
What about driving yourself?
You can — but in season, know this first: the village is a permanent ZTL with camera-controlled gates and there is no free parking. The only structures are paid, in Piazza della Libertà: a multi-storey at ~5-7 €/hour and an attended garage up to 50-80 €/day in high season — often full by morning on weekends. Paraggi has even fewer spots.
The final kilometres run on the SP227, narrow and winding, with spring and summer weekend queues and possible closures when crowds peak. You need a parking plan B as early as Santa Margherita.
When a chauffeur-driven car is the right tool
An NCC does not compete with the train on a solo traveller's price — it competes where the train and the last mile run aground:
- ✈️ Airport to the coast, skipping Milan entirely. Pickups at Malpensa (~2h40-3h to Portofino), Linate and Bergamo with flight monitoring: the pickup adjusts to the real landing time and the first hour of waiting is included. No train to Centrale + change + last mile with your bags.
- 📍 True door-to-door. The village entrance, Paraggi (beach clubs and Langosteria), hotels in Santa Margherita and Rapallo: you step out where you are going, not where the rails end.
- 🧳 Groups, families and day trips. A per-car quote agreed in advance on WhatsApp, a 5+ seat van if needed, and for a Tigullio tour the same driver stays with you for the day.

The 3 Portofino-route mistakes
The ones that turn a day trip into a long day.
- 🚗 Driving down in summer expecting to park. ZTL, no free spots, structures full by morning and SP227 queues: the parking plan is made before leaving, not at arrivals.
- 🚉 Assuming the train goes "to Portofino". The rails end at Santa Margherita: without a plan for the last 5 km you end up queuing for a packed bus with your bags, or paying 50-100 € for a taxi.
- 🚕 Counting on flagging a local taxi. In high season cars are few and in huge demand: on peak days you wait, and the ride is quoted per trip. The hard cases are solved by booking ahead.
