Italy's third-busiest airport still has no train: it arrives in December 2026. Today the backbone of the route is the bus to Milano Centrale — 50-55 minutes for 8-10 €, from 3 am to past midnight — and for solo travellers it works very well. Taxis have a fixed fare (128 €), and a pre-booked car wins on door-to-door, groups and the night windows. Verified timetables and tariffs, both directions.

The train that is not there (yet)
It surprises everyone who knows Malpensa: Orio al Serio, Italy's third-busiest airport, has no rail link today.
A new 5.3 km line between Bergamo station and the airport is under construction, with a station connected to the arrivals hall by a pedestrian tunnel. Opening is planned for December 2026: once live, expect ~58 minutes from Milano Centrale and 154 trains a day. Until then, rail means going via Bergamo city: a regional train to Bergamo FS, then the ATB Linea 1 city bus to the terminal (~15 minutes, every ~20, ticket 2.40-3.00 € depending on where you buy). Doable, but with a change and bags in hand: it mainly makes sense if Bergamo is on your way anyway.

The bus: the backbone of the route
And it deserves saying: for solo travellers it works very well.
Direct buses (Terravision, Orio Shuttle, Flibco) link the airport to Milano Centrale in ~50-55 minutes for 8-10 € one-way (online promos from 5 €). Departures average every 20 minutes and the service window is huge — first runs around 3 am, last after midnight — because the timetable is built around the flights.
The limits are two, and they are structural: you depart and arrive only at Milano Centrale (the last mile to your hotel or apartment is on you, bags included), and at peak times a full bus means waiting for the next one. By car the route is 45-50 km, 50-60 minutes depending on traffic.

When a pre-booked car is the right tool
An NCC does not compete with the bus on a solo traveller's price — it competes where the bus stops:
- 🏨 Door-to-door. The bus stops only at Centrale: if your hotel is near the Duomo, in Navigli or outside the centre, the last mile with suitcases is yours. A pre-booked car arrives at the address.
- 🧳 Groups and families. With 3-4 people and luggage, the per-car quote compares with the fixed taxi (128 €), not with a single bus ticket: a 5+ seat van booked with certainty, kids and bags with no transfers.
- 🌙 Night and delays. In the buses' uncovered window (~00:10-3:10 am) or after a delayed flight, flight monitoring adjusts the pickup for free and the first hour of waiting is included: the car is there when you actually land.

The 3 Bergamo-route mistakes
The ones that stretch a low-cost traveller's night.
- 🚆 Looking for the airport train. It does not exist yet: until December 2026 the rails stop at Bergamo city. Arriving at Centrale expecting a platform for Orio costs you the flight or the wallet.
- 🗺️ Reading "Milan" on the ticket and nothing else. The airport is in Bergamo, 45-50 km from central Milan: the last leg needs a plan, not an improvisation at arrivals with your bags.
- 🌙 Improvising after midnight with a family. The last bus is ~00:10 and service resumes at 3 am: with children and luggage, a delayed evening flight turns the wait into a long night. The hard cases are solved by booking ahead.
